Idioms

In my photographic journey, I've always been fascinated by the power of imagery to communicate intimate narratives and dismantle barriers between the viewer and the subject. As an artist, I believe in embracing vulnerability and authenticity, inviting the audience into a more personal conversation through my work.

For this series, I approach self-portraiture as a means to convey my own experiences within the Idioms, breaking away from the conventional notion of the photographer as a distant observer. Idioms serve as the perfect conduit for this exploration, as they encapsulate universal truths and offer comfort in times of struggle.

Collaborating with Philippe Leung and Willy Wong, we delve into the intricate nuances of language, particularly through the lens of idioms. Drawing from our collective experiences navigating life's challenges, whether it be traveling without a driver's license or facing uncertainties back home in Hong Kong, we find solace and amusement in the playful nature of idiomatic expressions.

Our cameras become tools of discovery, capturing the essence of each idiom in visual form. From "Birds of a feather flock together" to "Better late than never," we peel back the layers of meaning embedded within these phrases, revealing the hidden connections that bind us all.

Through this collaborative project, we invite viewers to share in our joy and laughter, to see beyond the surface of everyday speech and appreciate the richness of linguistic diversity. As recent graduates of the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), this series serves as a testament to the power of friendship and creative collaboration.

Our journey at SCAD was marked by growth, learning, and exploration, and this project symbolizes the bond that we formed during that time. Rooted in shared experiences and challenges, our friendship celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the ability of humor and language to unite us in moments of adversity.

In essence, our photographs serve as a reminder of the profound connection between language, laughter, and the human experience, offering a moment of respite and joy in the face of life's uncertainties.
