Concrete and Soil

Concrete and Soil is an ongoing series of photogravures examining the dialogue between urban environments and the resilient natural spaces that persist within them. Growing up in one of the world’s most densely populated cities, I was struck by Hong Kong’s unique juxtaposition: soaring skyscrapers alongside lush forests, mountains, and coastlines. This project seeks to expand that exploration to cities around the globe, appreciating how nature asserts itself even in the densest urban landscapes.

From roots cracking through sidewalks to plants thriving on forgotten rooftops, these natural elements serve as a universal testament to resilience. While each city carries its own distinct relationship with the environment, common threads emerge, revealing the enduring persistence of nature despite human development.

The photogravure process, with its rich textures and tones, presenting the interplay between the built and organic worlds. Each print celebrates the quiet but powerful presence of nature, offering a moment of reflection on its role within our cities.

Through Concrete and Soil, I aim to document this global relationship, encouraging viewers to recognize and respect nature’s adaptability. By bridging urban and natural, I hope to inspire a collective appreciation for the balance needed to sustain both.
